Consumers need to admit to debt problems

Officials from a leading charity in Dorset have said that the number one concern for residents in the area these days relates to personal debt levels, which has taken over from the previous major concern, which was related to benefits. This comes from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau in the area, which said that more and more people are now worried about debt related problems and issues, with the soaring cost of living and frozen wages adding to the problems that consumers are facing.

CAB officials have added, however, that there is an ever greater concern, which is that many of those who are facing severe debt problems are reducing to face up to the fact and are therefore taking no action to try and get themselves out of this situation. Whilst there are many solutions available to help those who are in debt and are struggling with repayments, those that fail to seek advice and help could be left facing festering debts that quickly spiral out of control.

Richard Bristow, the Poole CAB manager, said that there were many things that affected debt levels and problems, and for many people these issues had arisen due to unexpected events and incidents that had affected their income levels. He said that some of these problems were down to job losses, benefit cuts, ill health and other circumstances that had unexpectedly affected income levels.

He stated: He said: “Debt represents 45 per cent of our workload but there are ways to deal with it, even if it seems impossible.” He added: “People can make a start if they face up to the reality. Most people bury their heads in the sand and hope debt will go away or they will win the Lottery but, in reality, that is not going to happen.”
